Installation
- Download the latest version here
- Run the setup file (default name is Thunderbird Setup 2.0.0.x.exe) from wherever you downloaded it to
- Select "I accept the terms in the license agreement", click next
- Select standard install, click next
- After it's done installing, check the “launch thunderbird” check box
Creating & Configuring User Account
Upon 1st Start of Thunderbird, you should be prompted to create a new account.
1.Choose email account, click next

2.In the identity window, enter the name to what you want people who receive email from you to see, and email address is your email address

3.Select IMAP, set the incoming and outgoing server to email.mtu.edu

4.Incoming user name is your username

5.Account name should be your email address

6.Click Finish
7. It will ask for the password, hit cancel so you can finish the configuration
7.1 Go to Tools\Account Settings
8. Under the user's email address:
8.1 Click Server Settings on the left side, check “use secure connection (ssl)” and “empty trash on exit”

8.1.1 In Composition and Addressing:
8.1.2 In Composition set the dropdown menu to “start my reply above the quote”
8.1.3 In Addressing, select “Use a different LDAP server:”
8.1.4 Click edit directories

8.1.5 Click Add
8.1.6 Name: and Hostname: are ldap.mtu.edu
8.1.7 Base DN: ou=people, dc=mtu, dc=edu
8.1.9 Hit ok twice, then select the ldap.mtu.edu entry in the drop down menu for “use a different LDAP server”
8.1.10 This allows you to auto-fill mtu email addresses in the to field when sending email

8.2 In Outgoing Server (SMTP) check TLS
8.3 IF MACHINE IS A LAPTOP OR A HOME PC MAKE SURE THE PORT SAYS *2525*
9. Click ok

10. In Tools \ Options
11. Click on Composition, then forward messages as inline

12. Check spelling before sending

13. Check “directory server” and make sure “ldap.mtu.edu” is selected from the drop down list

Did you:
- Import old mail, like Eudora mail
- Import Address Book
- Set up Filters
- Create a signature(Use signature switch extension if multiple signatures)
- Check subscribed folders to see all are correct!
- Set Thunderbird as default mail application.
- Set Thunderbird as default in IE as administrator.
