Trillian:A Hitchhikers Guide to Trillian
From SASDocs

Trillian Overview:
This program combines many instant messaging protocols (AIM, MSN, ICQ, Yahoo!, and IRC) into one. It is not a standalone messaging service. In order to use Trillian, you should either already have instant messaging accounts available or be willing to create one. Plug-ins are available that give Trillian even more features such as the ability to check email, stocks, and news.

Trillian Installation & Set-up
Basic Trillian Installation Steps
- Begin with the newest version of the software. It is usually a free downloadable exe file. The newest version usually has security patches already applied.
- Install it as Administrator. This is so that we can create a generic trillian account.
- Leave the default install location as is. This installs it under C:\Program Files\Trillian. Default installations allow SAS to diagnose problems easier and quicker.
- Hit Launch.
- Select Trillian Pro or Trillian Basic. Trillian Pro requires a license which you can purchase from the company. There are certain features which Pro has that Basic does not have. Pro has encryption and Rendezvous support. Encryption allows you to talk securely. Rendezvous is a plug-in which allows Trillian to automatically find other people nearby on the same network. With Rendezvous, you can talk to other people in the Administration Building without having to add them to your list and you don’t have to go through another messaging protocol such as AOL or Yahoo!
Installing Trillian Pro
- First go to I:\ trillian_scottpollins
- Then Install Trillian Pro 2.013
- It will prompt you for a Username and Password, enter:
- Username: pollins@mtu.edu
- Password: admissions
- “Welcome to Trillian” Click next
- At the next window select “multiple users”.
- Then Click next until the program is completely installed
Trillian User Profile Information
We replace the profiles.ini file with a SAS designed profiles.ini. This creates an Administrator account and a generic user account. The generic account automatically logs in when a user launches Trillian. The generic account stores its settings in H:\Trillian. This ensures that Trillian settings follow the user and are not lost if the computer malfunctions.
On laptops, we try to keep the profile stored locally instead. C:\Program Files\Trillian\Users\username might be a directory where your contacts/information is stored. Storing it locally on the C:\ drive reduces the amount of Offline File Synchronization that is common with laptops.
Installing Plug-ins
We install Jabber, Spell Check and Message Notifier. Jabber is a special chat protocol that some SAS customers use. Spell Check checks your spelling as you chat. Message Notifier allows you to change what happens when you receive a message. It can blink, flash, or beep depending on how you set it.
To Install Plugins:
- Install the other three exe files (Spell Check 1.01.exe, Message Notifier 1.37.exe, Jabber 1.01.exe)in the I:\trillion_scottpollins folder
- Use all default options
- After all of the plugins are installed, you need to start Trillian
- Just keep clicking next when it asks for aol/icq/msn/etc. names
- Click Finish
- Click on File -> Preferences
- At the bottom of the menu, click Plugins
- Then on the right click quick add
- Click the first plugin (Jabber), then add the other two (Spell Check, Message Notifier)
- Close the Preferences window

- When it asks to set up a new account do the following:
- Name for Account: Admissions Chat Room
- User: type their first name
- server: test9.mtu.edu
- resource: Trillian
- password: type their first name
- click create and connect
- “manage your accounts” click in Admissions Chat Room
- Then Preferences
- Click Automatically connect to this account at startup
- Click save setting
- Click Close
Adding Contacts
Make sure all contacts accounts have been created, before adding them to a buddy list
- Click file -> add contact/group
- Click Next
- Choose Jabber for the Medium
- Click Next
- Userid: name@test9.mtu.edu
- Type Full Name for their Nick Name
- Click Add Contact (Don’t Press Enter)
- Repeat the 3 previous steps to add more contacts
- After you have added all contact click done
Common Problems:
- A user cannot save his or her settings.
- This is generally from an earlier installation process where the Trillian settings were stored in the C:\Program Files\Trillian\Users directory. This can be fixed by either changing permissions on that directory or setting up Trillian to store in the H:\Trillian directory and then moving the user’s information in there.
- When I open Trillian I can see my contacts but they are grey and offline.
- This is either because you are not connected to a specific protocol such as AIM or Yahoo! or the plug-ins for them are not checked
