[edit] How to install 'Windows' on 'Parallels Desktop' on a Mac
This is extremely brief for the moment...
[edit] Install Parallels onto the Mac as normal
- When it is run you start at the 'OS Installation Assistant'
1. Select Custom and then click 'Next >'
2. Choose Windows for 'OS Type' and Windows XP for 'OS Version' and then click 'Next >'
3. Select about 512MB of RAM for a computer with 2GB total and then click 'Next >'
Or make a judgment call for odd cases or ask someone
4. Move the sysprep image from cerebro\iso\parallels to the root/public folder (give everyone access).
5. Select that image as your hdd.
6. Select Bridged Ethernet option and the click 'Next >'
7. Select en0: Ethernet Adapter and leave options defult and then click 'Next >'
8. Name the Virtual Machine the same thing as the Mac is named with a 'VM' on the end.
EXAMPLE: 'CheeseVM' for a Machine named 'Cheese'
UNCHECK the Enable File Sharing Option and then click 'Next >'
9. Leave Virtual machine option checked and then click 'Next >'
10. Select media for the Installation and then click 'Finish'
- Now the system should try to install itself and from there you proceed as if it where any other WinXP install.
11. After you complete the update process inside the vm machine create a snapshot and call it clean.
[edit] Drivers
- To install the drivers for the system you must install Parallels Tools.
- To do this go to Actions drop down menu and select Install Parallels Tools.
[edit] Static IP
If the computer is somewhere where it needs a static IP (like the EERC), you will need to give Parallels its proper IP address in two places: on the Windows sides, and on one of the interfaces on the Mac side. Leave the 10.x.x.x interface; change the other one. If you don't do this, Parallels will cause weird network problems with the Mac, one of the symptoms of which is that it can't access anything on the .36 subnet.
