Common issues in Eudora

Forgotten passwords:

The Eudora password is the users ISO password, which is used for Merit (if they’ve ever used dial-up at Tech), and for other sites within Tech’s site. It is also the same as their Huskymail password. When a user can’t remember their Eudora password, please have them go to www.login.mtu.edu and click on the Change Password link. This will guide them to the ISO website, where they can click on the “Forgotten Your Password?” link. They will be asked for their user ID, and then they will be asked to answer their 5 secret questions, which ARE case sensitive. If they can’t remember their secret questions, then please call us and we can reset their ISO password.

Once a password has been reset:

When a user gets a new password, it will be a randomly generated password that is generally hard to remember. Once a user has successfully used said password, please take them to email.mtu.edu and have them click on the Change Password link. They will be asked to enter their user name and current password (the one just generated for them). If they have never set their 5 secret questions, they will be taken to the site to do that now, before they can change their password. If they have set their 5 secret questions, they will be able to simply change their password by following the instructions on the page. They can also change their secret questions from this page, in case they forget their password again.

Refreshing Mailbox list:

Sometimes when you log into Eudora the folders under Dominant will not all show up. If you encounter this problem, right click on Dominant and click on “Refresh Mailbox list.” This will refresh your mailboxes from the server and they should then re-appear. Folders you see after running Huskymail once should include Inbox, Drafts, Sent, and Trash. You should also see a folder labeled Spam.

Trashing Messages in IMAP:

Once converted to IMAP you will no longer be able to trash messages to your old Trash box. Your Trash should be transferring to your new Dominant Trash. If your Trash is not transferring to your new location it will have to be directed manually to your new Trash box under Dominant. To do this click on Tools, then Options and select “Incoming Mail.” Now under “When I delete Messages” click the “Move to” option. Then click on the large “Trash” button to the right of that. This should bring up the list of your mailboxes. Select the Trash Mailbox under the Dominant directory. If you do not see “Trash”, sign into Huskymail (huskymail.mtu.edu) and then refresh the mailboxes in Eudora. If you had a “Deleted Items” mailbox setup for you we encourage you to change to “Trash” and remove “Deleted Items.” This will keep Huskymail and Eudora Trash in the same location.

Icons becoming obsolete under IMAP:

Some icons in the toolbar might become inactive once converted over to IMAP. The “In” button would be an example. It will still point to the old mailboxes under POP Eudora. You can remove the old Shortcut icons and add new ones that will point to the new “Inbox”. Right click on the toolbar above and select the “customize” option. Note: If the customize option is hidden, Eudora will have to be converted to sponsor mode. (Click help, select “payment and registration”, and then click on “sponsor mode”) Under customize click on the mailboxes tab. Now click on the mailbox that you want to make a shortcut for. You can now drag the shortcut of your choice displayed on the right up into the toolbar. You can then drag the old shortcut icon on the toolbar back into the box that the new shortcut icon originated from.

Removing the “mbox” from your mailbox list:

The mbox is a mailbox that is an exact duplicate of your Inbox and is created when IMAP is put in place and can be ignored. If you have an “mbox” that shows up under Dominant it can be hid from view. We can do that for you here at SAS or you can follow the steps listed below. Be sure you have exited Eudora. For PC’s go to your “H:\adpref\eudora” directory on your H:\ drive and delete the “mbox” directory (folder). Next open both the “mboxlist.lst” and “tmp_mboxlist.lst” files in notepad and delete the mbox line of script from each and save the changes. Open Eudora back up and check for the mbox directory under Dominant. Note: Eudora might give you an error that it cannot find the mbox directory. Ignore it and click ok, restart Eudora and it should start up without encountering that error again. For laptops go to the “C:\Eudora\Eudora_mail” directory on your C:\ drive, find the mbox directory and follow the steps listed above.
