When installing the F5 VPN client from vpn.mtu.edu, if the simple "Get an MTU Address" doesn't work due to a weird "Phone Book Error", here's what you do:

  • Start a session of Internet Explorer as local administrator.
  • Go to vpn.mtu.edu.
  • Click on "Install Standalone VPN Client". Choose Run, and click Run, Next, etc. until it's installed.
  • The program does something dumb with Windows, and forces it to always use a proxy server. You need to fix this:
    • Open the Control Panel.
    • Open Internet Options.
    • Click the Connections tab.
    • Choose "Never dial a connection". Click OK.
  • Now, open the standalone VPN client, either through the Start Menu or desktop icon, if it installed one.
  • If you did the steps above correctly, you won't get a dial-up prompt, and the VPN client will work without any phone book errors.
